KIMBERLY’S APPROACH
What is Yoga?
“What is yoga?” is a question that is not asked very often, but it should be. What do you think of when you hear the word “yoga”? There are a lot of assumptions as to what yoga really is, at Kimberly’s Yoga and More we like to address what yoga is, by first sharing what yoga is NOT. Yoga is not a religion, yoga is not a cult, yoga is not an exclusive or elusive club, and yoga is not for women only.
Yoga is described as a practice or discipline, a group of mental, physical and spiritual practices or disciplines that originated in ancient India over 4,000 years ago with an aim to control and settle the mind, with practices for breathing, meditation and body postures most popularly practiced for health, relaxation and weight loss.
There are many different types of yoga: the most common are Ashtanga yoga, Hatha yoga, Hot yoga, Iyengar yoga, Katonah yoga, Kundalini yoga, Power yoga, Restorative yoga and Vinyasa yoga. Within these most popular types of yoga there are many different schools of yoga that have a unique set of principles and guidelines derived from their yoga lineage ~ so it is important to keep in mind that when you go to a yoga studio or take a yoga class, do some homework to find out what kind of yoga it is and if for some reason you do not have a wonderful experience, do not assume that all yoga is the same, continue to try different classes, instructors and studios.
At Kimberly’s Yoga and more our approach is not towards a specific type of yoga, (we acknowledge and draw from all yogas) our focus is alignment based yoga to maximize the benefits of each yoga posture and minimize the risk of injury for each client, each class and each workshop. One of our favorite things to teach is how to “fit yourself” instead of fitting into a shape and understanding that each of us are physically unique ~ we will never look exactly like anyone else in a yoga posture so fitting yourself first and understanding our own limitations is the kind of yoga we embrace.
Yoga classes offered, in-studio or online. Group yoga classes, one on one private yoga classes and online yoga classes.
All levels welcome.
